Eagles Go 3-0 At Mid-Atlantic Duals

For the first part of this wrestling season, the Ashland University wrestling team seemed to be living that old country and western tune, "A Stranger In My House."

The Eagles lost their first two home dual meets of the season, dropping matches to Mercyhurst and Lake Erie. That's not the norm for a team that was close to a lock at home the last two years. Sunday (Jan. 20) at the Third Annual Wendy's Mid-Atlantic Duals, the Eagles returned to their old ways, sweeping three matches.

AU overpowered Seton Hill, 38-14, pounded East Stroudsburg, 33-6 and finished the afternoon with a 42-9 conquest of Belmont Abbey. The sweep gives AU an 8-4 record in dual meets this season.

"It was nice that we got more offense going with some of our guys," commented AU head coach Tim Dernlan. "It's pretty cool to be able to start each match with a couple of wins, that's exciting. It was nice to see Tyler Houska get some mat time. He's not there yet, but he's getting there."

The quick starts Dernlan referenced are courtesy of sophomore Max Byrd (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) at 125 pounds and freshman Michael Labry (Twinsburg, Ohio) at 133. Both went 3-0 Sunday. Byrd is ranked eighth in the country and Labry is ranked fourth. Labry still hasn't tasted defeat as a collegian, he's 25-0. Byrd isn't far behind at 19-3.

Sophomore Joe Brandt (Versailles, Ohio) is ranked third in the nation at 197 pounds and he picked up an impressive win on Sunday against East Stroudsburg's Tyson Searer. Searer is ranked fifth in the country. Brandt was a 3-0 winner over the East Stroudsburg grappler.

As for Houska, the junior wrestled for the first time this season on Friday at Pitt-Johnstown. The redshirt junior is working his way back from a foot injury he suffered during football season. Senior Dan Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Massillon Perry) is also coming back from injury. He wrestled at UPJ and got two matches in on Sunday.

"They're coming along well," Dernlan said. "They're both about a week away from peak condition. They're coming back at the right time."

The Eagles inserted some new names into the lineup throughout the day. That will give Dernlan and his staff something to think about as they prepare for a match at Gannon this coming Saturday (Jan. 26).

"It's hard to pinpoint who stood out today," admitted Dernlan. "I thought we wrestled hard up and down the lineup. We had some new guys in there, a few guys we hadn't seen before in an Ashland singlet. That was neat to see. We'll have some wrestle-offs this week. We're still looking for our best 10."
