Ashland To Host 2014 Wrestling Championships

The NCAA announced today that Ashland University has been selected as the official host for the 2014 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. AU will partner with the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission in putting on the event. The Championships will be held at Cleveland's Public Hall.

AU has hosted a number of NCAA championship events in recent years. The Eagles have been the official host for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships several times and have held those meets in Canton, Ohio.  In 2002, the Eagles played host to the NCAA Division II cross country championships. Those races were held at Ashland's Brookside Golf Course.

Ashland hosted the NCAA Division II Softball Championships at Akron's Firestone Stadium in 2007.

The Eagles have been a constant presence at the championships througout their wrestling history.  A year ago, senior Jacob Southwick earned his second All-America citation. He was one of four AU grapplers to earn All-America honors. Ashland was 13th at last year's NCAA Championships.

The Eagles are under the direction of fourth-year head coach Tim Dernlan who has rejuvenated the program since he arrived on campus.  This year's AU recruiting class has been ranked second in the nation among all NCAA Division II schools. Sophomore Joe Brandt (Versailles, Ohio) begins this season ranked first in the nation at 197 pounds.
