Eagles Too Much For Student Princes

Eagles Too Much For Student Princes

What kind of "Duals Personality," will this 2010-11 Ashland University wrestling team have?

The first possible clue to that question came on Tuesday night (Dec. 6) when the Eagles, with four freshmen, two sophomores and without 285-pound All-American Jacob Southwick (Bowling Green, Ohio/Otsego), stopped Heidelberg, 27-10 in Tiffin, Ohio.

AU head coach Tim Dernlan doesn't have his full lineup in place at this point in the season and that fact doesn't seem to bother him a whit.  Some his wrestlers are banged up and need a break. At other spots, Dernlan wants to experiment a bit.  Normally a coach who takes  the glass-is-half-full approach, Dernlan sees this as an opportunity for some up-and-coming wrestlers to see what they can accomplish. It's hard to argue with him after the way the Eagles, ranked 10th in the country, opened the dual-meet portion of the schedule at Heidelberg.

The four freshmen went 2-2 at Seiberling Gymnasium.  The Student Princes (2-4) are usually one of the best NCAA Division III outfits in the country.  AU didn't allow Heidelberg to build up any momentum, racing out to an 8-0 lead and then taking a 21-4 lead after a 14-2 major decision by senior Tommie Graszl (Mansfield, Ohio/Madison) at 165 pounds.

The evening began with senior Brandon Davis (Greensboro, N.C./Page) stopping Delian Schneider, 8-6 at 125 pounds.  Davis is 9-4 and ranked seventh in the country.

At 133 pounds, sophomore Adli Edwards (Gahanna, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) stepped into the spot normally held by senior Dan Mandara (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and won by technical fall over Cam Michel, 17-0 (4:03).  This was the first match of the year for Edwards.

After HC's Chris Osborne stopped junior Dan Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Massillon Perry) with a 14-4 major decision at 141 pounds, the Eagles won four straight matches.  That run included sophomore Jake Piatt's (Medina, Ohio) first pin of the season at 157 pounds. Piatt (7-6) pinned Dustin Powell in 1:36.

At 174 pounds, freshman Bryson Hall (Doylestown, Ohio/Chippewa) was 5-2 winner over Jeremy Stepp. Hall is 10-3.

AU's last victory came at 197 pounds. Freshman Joe Brandt (Versailles, Ohio), fresh off a tournament championship at the Ohio Northern Invitational, defeated Andy Lovins, 6-3.

The Eagles are idle until they travel to Indianapolis for the Midwest Classic on Dec. 18-19.
