As announced on Wednesday (April 19) morning by the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Ashland University junior forwards Andi Daugherty and Laina Snyder each have earned their first GLIAC Commissioner's Awards.
The awards come less than a month after Daugherty and Snyder led the Eagles to the program's second NCAA Division II national championship and the first 37-0 finish in the history of D-II women's basketball.
During the 2016-17 season, Daugherty averaged 15.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 54.6 percent from the field, 37.8 percent from the 3-point line and 81.3 percent from the free-throw line.
Among her junior-season accolades were three All-American honors (first-team All-Women's Basketball Coaches Association and second-team Division II Conference Commissioner's Association and Basketball Bulletin), Elite Eight All-Tournament team, second-team College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-American, Midwest Regional Tournament Most Outstanding Player, first-team D2CCA all-region, GLIAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, first-team All-GLIAC, All-GLIAC Defensive team, CoSIDA Academic All-District, All-GLIAC Academic Excellence and U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II Player of the Week on Jan. 3.
A Finance major, Daugherty's cumulative grade-point average through the fall of 2016 is 3.93.
This past season, Snyder led the Eagles in scoring (17.4 ppg.), rebounding (8.8 rpg.) and steals (101), while also averaging 3.6 assists per contest and hitting 51.6 percent from the floor and 80.0 percent from the charity stripe.
Her impressive junior campaign led to the following honors – Division II Basketball Bulletin Player of the Year, first-team All-American laurels from the WBCA, D2CCA and Basketball Bulletin; Elite Eight Most Outstanding Player, second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, All-Midwest Region tournament team, D2CCA Midwest Region Player of the Year, first-team D2CCA all-region, GLIAC Player of the Year, first-team All-GLIAC, All-GLIAC Defensive team, CoSIDA Academic All-District and All-GLIAC Academic Excellence.
A Business Management major, Snyder sports a cumulative GPA of 3.90 through the 2016 fall semester.
Ashland's athletic program has earned 34 GLIAC Commissioner's Awards since the fall of 2007. Daugherty and Snyder give the women's basketball program five, along with Alyssa Miller (2013-14), Kari Daugherty (2012-13) and Jena Stutzman (2011-12).
The GLIAC Commissioner's Awards are presented after the fall, winter and spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play. All GPAs are based on a 4.0 scale.
