Ramsey Named Dispatch Coach of the Year
Ashland University women's basketball coach Sue Ramsey is the 2011-12 Columbus Dispatch Women's Basketball Coach of the Year. The newspaper made the announcement on Sunday (Apr. 22). The coach of the year award is selected by coaches from around the state.
Ramsey received 21 first place votes and 66 total points. Suzy Venet of Mount Union was second in the voting with four first place votes and 33 points.
Ramsey led the Eagles to a 33-2 record. AU won the first GLIAC basketball championship in school history and was undefeated in conference play. Ashland advanced to the NCAA playoffs for the third time in school history. The Eagles played in the national championship game for the first time. At one point, the Eagles won 33 consecutive games. That was the longest NCAA Division II winning streak in the nation this season, men or women.
Earlier this spring, Ramsey was honored as the WBCA NCAA Division II national coach of the year. She is this year's GLIAC coach of the year. The WBCA also presented Ramsey with its Carol Eckman Award, which recognizes commitment to the game of basketball.
This past season was Ramsey's 17th at Ashland. Prior to coming to AU she spent eight years as the head coach at Dayton.
