(Both games can be heard live on 1340 WNCO-AM with Matt Brubaker on the call.)

Overview

Ever since the GLIAC schedule was released, the Eagles have had this week circled in red. That's not because Valentine's Day is next week. This week, the Eagles go to Grand Valley State and Ferris State. Over the years, GVSU has been a chamber of horrors for the Eagles.  As for Ferris State, the AU coaching staff believed that the Bulldogs would be one of the conference's better teams this season. That prediction has come true – Ashland and FSU are locked in a battle to claim the GLIAC's top seed and the home court advantage throughout the GLIAC postseason.  Ferris State is ranked 25th in the country this week.

The Eagles start the week with a school record 20-game win streak. This is the fourth time the Eagles have won 20 or more games under head coach Sue Ramsey and the first since the 2005-06 season (AU was 23-8 in 2003-04, 20-9 in 2004-05 and 21-11 in 2005-06).  AU is ranked fifth this week, up one spot from last week. That's the highest the Eagles have ever climbed in the national poll.

About the Eagles

This is the first time in school history AU has started the GLIAC schedule with a 14-0 card.  The Eagles have been in the GLIAC since the 1995-96 season……Ashland had 12 three-point field goals last Saturday against Tiffin and that ties the school, single-game record set earlier this season…last Saturday's home win over the Dragons extended AU's home winning streak to a school record 15 games dating back to last season.  AU is 11-0 at home this year…Ashland's 20-game winning streak is the second longest by a varsity sport at AU. The longest winning streak belongs to the 1998 softball team, which won 30 straight games…when AU limited Tiffin to 30 percent shooting from the floor last Saturday, it marked the lowest field goal percentage by the opposition since Lake Erie connected on 29.5 percent of its field goal tries on Dec. 11.  AU has held three teams under 30 percent from the field this year. AU's best effort in this department came at Kates Gymnasium on Nov. 27 when the Eagles held Saint Joseph's to 21 percent (13-of-62)…junior forward Kari Daugherty (Fresno, Ohio/Dayton) is this week's GLIAC South Division player of the week. She's won that award three times this season. In two games last week Daugherty averaged 25.5 ppg., 18.0 rpg., 8.0 apg., 2.0 bpg., and shot 61.3 percent from the floor and 70 percent from three-point range.  Daugherty just missed her second triple double of the season when she had 25 points, 20 rebounds and nine assists against Tiffin. The 20 rebounds is one board shy of the school, single-game record Daugherty shares with Daiva Gerbec (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson).  Daugherty is the only player in school history with a triple double. Against Findlay on Jan. 5 she had 12 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists. Daugherty is the GLIAC leader in scoring (20.6 ppg.) and rebounding (12.2 rpg.) and is second in assists per game (4.5) and assist-turnover ratio (1.9).  She is sixth in blocks per game (1.2) and eighth in field goal percentage (.503) and free throw percentage (.840)…sophomore guard-forward Ashley Dorner (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) is second in the conference in field goal percentage (.572), 10th in scoring (13.5 ppg.) and 14th in rebounding (6.5 rpg.)…senior guard Jena Stutzman (Berlin, Ohio/Kent State) is second in the loop in triples per game (2.6), 12th in assists (3.1 apg.) and 14th in scoring (12.6 ppg.)…freshman guard Taylor Woods (Wadsworth, Ohio) leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.468/22-of-47)…junior guard Lindsay Tenyak (Wadsworth, Ohio) is the GLIAC leader in assist-turnover ratio (2.0) and is fifth in three-point field goal percentage (.427) and seventh in three-point field goals per game (2.0/41)…sophomore guard Alyssa Miller (Zanesville, Ohio/Tri-Valley) is first in the conference in assists per game (4.8), third in assist-turnover ratio (1.8) and seventh in field goal percentage (.504)…Ashland leads the conference in scoring offense (79.3 ppg.), scoring margin (+20.5), free throw percentage (.804), field goal percentage (.480), three-point field goal percentage (.370), assists (19.6 apg.) and assist-turnover ratio (1.3). AU is second in rebound margin (+9.4), three-pointers per game (7.7) and field goal percentage defense (.365).

Looking at the Record Book

Daugherty is averaging 20.6 ppg., which puts her in some select company. Only two players in school history have averaged 20 points per game for a season. Amber Rall averaged a school record 23.4 ppg., in 2006-07 and Vickie Schmitz averaged 21.0 ppg., in 1988-89.

Daugherty is averaging 12.2 rpg. The school record for rebounds per game was set last season by Gerbec (10.7 rpg.).  Gerbec established the school record for rebounds (311) last season.  Daugherty has 256 boards.

Advanced Statistics

  • Since the opening weekend of the season at the California Tournament, Ashland has trailed by more than eight points just once (at Tiffin).
  • Outside of that opening weekend, AU has trailed in the second half one time (at Tiffin).
  • Since the first weekend of the season, the Eagles have trailed by more than five points once (at Tiffin).
  • In their last five road games the Eagles have averaged 86.4 ppg.
  • Over the last three games Miller has averaged 15.6 ppg., and shot 61.3 percent (19-of-31) from the floor.  Miller is averaging 7.8 ppg.
  • Stutzman has 54 three-point field goals, which ties her with Bridget Donovan (1998-99) for the second highest single season total in school history. The single season leader is Karen Bley (96, 1997-98).
  • Ashland has had the same starting five – Daugherty-Dorner-Stutzman-Miller-Tenyak for 19 consecutive games.  The last time that combo was broken up was on Nov. 13 vs. Indianapolis when junior forward-center Beth Mantkowski (Fairlawn, Ohio/Copley) started in place of Dorner.  Daugherty, Stutzman, Tenyak and Miller have started every game this season.

Head Coach Sue Ramsey

Ramsey has a career record of 369-325 and this is her 25th season.  At Ashland she is 274-197 and this is her 17th season. Ramsey has guided the Eagles to the only two NCAA Division II playoff berths in school history.  Those came in 2003-04 and 2005-06.  Ramsey is AU's career leader in victories.  The AU head coach is also an assistant athletic director and the university's senior women's administrator.

Prior to arriving at AU, Ramsey spent eight years as the head coach at the University of Dayton (1986-1994).  She served as an assistant coach at Cincinnati (1984-86) and Miami (1983-84) and as a graduate assistant coach at Illinois State (1982-83).

Ramsey is a 1978 Miami (OH) graduate. She earned her master's degree from Dayton in 1988.

Scouting the Lakers

Grand Valley State enters Thursday's game with a four-game losing streak. The Lakers have lost five of their last six games.  Despite that skid, GVSU has demonstrated some muscle on the defensive end of the floor. The Lakers lead the conference in scoring defense (55.8 ppg.), are third in field goal percentage defense (.373) and are fourth in rebound margin (+6.3).

Briauna Taylor, a 5-9 junior guard-forward, is ninth in the league in scoring (14.4 ppg.). She averages 6.3 rpg., and 1.2 spg., and last Saturday, had 19 points and 10 rebounds in a 51-42 loss to Lake Superior State.

The GVSU head coach is Janel Burgess, who is in her fifth year. She is 83-52 with the Lakers.  A year ago, GVSU was 20-8 and advanced to the NCAA playoffs. That's been pretty much par for the course for this program, the Lakers have won 20 or more games in five of the last six seasons.

The Ashland-Grand Valley State Series

The Eagles nipped the Lakers, 55-54 a year ago at Kates Gymnasium. That broke a two-game losing streak to the Lakers. It's been tough sledding for the Eagles in Allendale, Mich. AU will be trying to break an eight-game losing streak at GVSU. The last time Ashland won at Grand Valley State came during the 2000-01 season, 70-55.  The Lakers hold a 15-9 lead in the all-time series.

In last year's game, AU led, 20-3, with 10:17 to go in the first half.  Ashland led at halftime, 30-18. GVSU shot 18.8 percent in the first half with nine turnovers.  Behind Taylor (26 points, nine rebounds) Grand Valley State rallied and the second half was a back-and forth affair.  AU senior forward Liz Tyler scored 21 points, including five points in the final 16 seconds, to seal the win.

Scouting the Bulldogs

The Bulldogs will play Lake Erie on Thursday night. FSU begins the week with a nine-game winning streak.  The last time Ferris State lost was on Dec. 31, to Saint Joseph's, 67-65.  Last Saturday, FSU shot down Saginaw Valley State, 81-57.

Ferris State features one of the GLIAC's top all-around players in 5-7 sophomore guard Sarah DeShone.  She's sixth in the conference in scoring (15.5 ppg.) and steals (2.2 spg.), third in assists (4.2 apg.), fourth in three-point percentage (.434/33-of-76) and fifth in free throw percentage (.855/59-of-69).

Tricia Principe, a 5-9 senior guard-forward, averages 11.3 ppg.  She's second in the GLIAC in free throw percentage (.913/73-of-80).  Christine Branch, a 6-2 freshman forward-center, averages 9.7 ppg., and 8.1 rpg. She's eighth in the GLIAC in rebounding.

The FSU head coach is Tracey Dorow.  She's been at Ferris State since the 1998-99 season.  Her record on the Bulldogs bench is 224-160.  She led last year's team to a 13-13 record, 8-11 in the conference.

The Ashland-Ferris State Series

The Eagles hold a 15-10 edge in the all-time series and have a four-game winning streak against the 'Dogs.  Last season in Ashland, the Eagles defeated the Bulldogs, 68-58.  The last time the teams played at Jim Wink Arena, during the 2008-09 season, AU was an 84-62 winner.

In last year's game, Miller had 17 points and five assists and Tenyak fired in 13 points. Gerbec had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Principe had 14 points for FSU.
