Ashland University junior Drew Windle is the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association men's athlete of the week. The organization made the announcement today.
Windle ran at the George Mason Invitational last Saturday (Apr. 12). He won the 800 meters in 1:46.91. The field included more than 70 other professional and Division I competitors. That time is 10th on the all-time NCAA Division II list.
Windle's time is the fastest by an NCAA Division II runner since Ossie Mdziniso of Augustana (S.D.) went 1:46.54 in July of 1997.
This marks his second National Athlete of the Week award this year. The other citation came in February during the 2014 indoor season.
Windle has won two consecutive national championships indoors in the 800. He is the defending national champion in the event outdoors.
