Softball Regains Footing With Florida Sweep

Ashland University's softball team snapped a three-game losing streak by winning two games in Florida on Tuesday (March 8) – 4-1 over Wilmington and 15-6 over Edinboro.

The win over Wilmington saw senior designated player Bri Buckley go 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Senior pitcher Brittany Flanigan improved to 2-1 after a complete-game five-hitter with five strikeouts.

The Eagles broke a 1-all tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the sixth. The winning run in the fifth came in when senior Sarah Alley reached on a fielding error and got an RBI in a pinch-hitting role.

Against Edinboro, Ashland had four innings with crooked numbers – three runs in the second, four in the third, three in the fifth and four in the seventh. Sophomore third baseman Marissa Caraballo was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a double and a triple, while junior designated hitter Alexis Van Horn was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs.

Senior first baseman Jen Moore was 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs, while junior center fielder Ally Farrah, freshman right fielder Katie Mitchell, senior shortstop Shelbie Prince and junior second baseman Kalene Freshour each had two hits.

Freshman Hannah Stroe earned her first collegiate victory after 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.

The Eagles (6-5) return to action in Florida on Thursday (March 10) against Holy Family (9 a.m.) and Trevecca Nazarene (11 a.m.).
