Ashland University men's soccer sophomore forward Thomas Ardron has been selected to the All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team and freshman midfielder Yusuke Yasumasu was named to the All-GLIAC honorable mention list, the league office announced Wednesday (Nov. 2) evening.
Ardron mounted a terrific offensive campaign for the Eagles playing on the left wing in attack. The sophomore scored six goals for the third-highest scoring team in the GLIAC. The Poulton-le-Fylde, England native scored a goal in each of AU's first two games and scored twice in a 3-2 win over Davenport, including the overtime game-winner. Ardron won GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors for his performance in that game, becoming the first Ashland player since 2011 with a conference weekly honor.
Yasumasu had an impressive debut season as an attacking central midfielder for Ashland. The Toyko, Japan native played in just 11 games and made six starts, but still scored three goals and added an assist. He scored in back-to-back wins in early October against Purdue Northwest and Davenport and had a goal and an assist in AU's 3-3 tie with Northern Michigan late in the season. Yasumasu quickly gained a reputation as one of the top creative playmakers in the conference in his rookie season.
The Eagles finished the year with a 7-9-1 mark that included five wins against in-region nonconference competition. AU scored 31 goals on the season, a remarkable uptick from the 18 scored in 2016, the first year for the AU men's soccer program after a three-year hiatus.
