For the second time in 2017, Ashland University junior defensive end James Prater Jr. is the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
As announced by the GLIAC on Monday (Nov. 13) morning, Prater Jr. earned the award following a dominant game on Saturday (Nov. 11) afternoon at home vs. Saginaw Valley State. Prater Jr. tied Ashland's single-game sacks record of 3½, originally set by College Football Hall of Famer Bill Royce, and ended with nine total tackles (seven solo).
Also on Saturday, Prater Jr. became the Eagles' single-season record holder in tackles for loss with 19½.
Prater also won the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week award in Week 4 of this season.
Ashland's football team finishes the 2017 campaign with eight GLIAC Player of the Week awards, the program's best single-season total since joining the conference in 1999 and its most in a year in either the GLIAC (1999-current) or the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (1990-98).
The Eagles (10-1), ranked No. 10 in the country, will begin NCAA Division II postseason play at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field vs. No. 18 Northwest Missouri State (9-2) on Saturday (Nov. 18) at a time to be announced.
