    Four teams have pulled away and ascended to the top of the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football standings. All four of those teams will play in the top two games of the Week 8 GLIAC schedule on “Showdown Saturday,” Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. – Ashland (6-1 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) at Tiffin (5-2, 4-1) and Grand Valley State (6-1, 5-0) at Ferris State (5-1, 4-1).

Ashland University’s 16th-ranked football team, however, had its collective eyes squarely set on the here and now, as the Eagles recorded a 48-0 win over Michigan Tech in AU’s 94th Homecoming game on Saturday (Oct. 14) afternoon at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field.

Drilling down further on the 16th-ranked Eagles’ rushing defense numbers, the result is a gusher of impressive statistics.

    Thanks to a dominant effort in which it allowed just three points in Ashland University’s 20-3 win over No. 2-ranked Ferris State on Saturday (Sept. 23) night at Jack Miller Stadium/Martinelli Field, the Eagles’ defense has shot up to second place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in scoring defense (16.0 ppg.). That in and of itself is impressive, given the offenses Ashland has faced in the first four weeks of the 2017 season. Drilling down further, the Eagle “D” has been most stingy when the stakes are highest.
