Eagles, Greyhounds Ranked Among Nation's Best
Both the Ashland University Eagles and the Indianapolis Greyhounds are listed among, "Others' Receiving Votes," in the 2012 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Preseason Division II Coaches' Poll.
The Eagles and Greyhounds will collide in a non-conference game on Thursday, Aug. 30, at 7 p.m., in Ashland. That's the season opener for both teams.
Indianapolis received 70 points in the preseason poll and Ashland collected six points. These teams played a year ago at AU and the Eagles won in four overtimes, 39-36. That's the longest game in Ashland football history.
Defending national champion Pittsburg State begins the season on top in the AFCA poll. Minnesota-Duluth is ranked second and Northwest Missouri State is third. Wayne State is the highest ranked GLIAC team. The Warriors are ranked fifth. Grand Valley State is ranked seventh and Hillsdale is ranked 17th. AU will host Wayne State on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. a A year ago in Ashland the Eagles upended the Warriors, 20-17. WSU entered that game undefeated and ranked sixth in the country.
Last season the Eagles opened the season at ninth-ranked Bloomsburg and lost, 27-20 in a game that wasn't decided until late in the fourth quarter. AU began last season included in Among Others Receiving Votes in the AFCA poll.
