The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2017 All-GLIAC Baseball Teams and Postseason Awards on Wednesday (May 10) night, and three Ashland University baseball players were among the honorees.
Junior second baseman J.P. Sorma has earned All-GLIAC second-team honors. Sorma hit .358 with 33 runs scored, 17 doubles, one triple, seven home runs, 44 RBIs, seven stolen bases and a .590 slugging percentage. Sorma is tied for seventh in the conference in doubles and seventh in RBIs.
Both freshman outfielder Vince Vanata and senior left-handed pitcher Mike Gentile garnered All-GLIAC honorable mention. Vanata was a .367 hitter (eighth in the GLIAC) with 39 runs scored, 15 doubles, two triples, a home run, 20 RBIs, nine steals and a .457 on-base percentage (ninth in the GLIAC).
Gentile went 5-9 with a 4.89 earned-run average and 77 strikeouts (third in the GLIAC) in 77 1/3 innings, and was tied for the league lead with five complete games.
