Eagles Win Opener In 11 Innings

The Ashland University baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 3-2 victory over Davenport.

AU scored a run in the bottom of the 11th inning to get the win and put an end to a long day. The game was played in Auburndale, Fla. The Eagles left Ashland at 4 a.m., flew to Florida and took the field for the 5 p.m. game.

In the 11th inning,  Kyle Brooks singled to center field. Nick Edwards dropped a single into right field to move pinch runner Nash Cunningham to third. Edwards took second on the throw.

Davenport intentionally walked Wade Kaido to load the bases. Shortstop Austin Walts delivered a single to bring in the winning run. Walts was 3-for-6.

The win went to righty Vince Frate, who worked one scoreless innings. The Eagles used six pitchers in the game. That group held Davenport (7-4) to four hits. AU pitchers walked six and struck out seven. The Eagles didn't allow a hit until the eighth inning. Sam Shafer started and went four innings.

Mackenzie Hampshire was 3-for-4 and Edwards and Kaido both went 2-for-5. Kaido had a triple. The Eagles collected 12 hits.

The loss went to Ryan Butzer, who pitched five innings in relief. He allowed a run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
