The Ashland University baseball team split a doubleheader with Minnesota State-Mankato on Friday (Mar. 15) in Auburndale, Fla.
Ashland won the opener, 11-3 and lost the second game, 5-2. The Eagles are 8-4 and will play two games against Lock Haven on Saturday (Mar. 16).
In the Friday victory, the Eagles rapped out 16 hits. That was plenty of support for right-hander Eric Vaughan (Delta, Ohio/Owens C.C.), who pitched a complete game. In seven innings of work the senior allowed three runs, two earned, on eight hits. Vaughan walked two and struck out five.
Third baseman Wade Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio) was 3-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs. Outfielder Austin Erb (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) was 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI. Outfielder Alex Shotwell (San Mateo, Calif./Canada College) was 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run. Shortstop Austin Walts (Amherst, Ohio/Amherst Steele) was 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Second baseman Matt Gundlach (Monroeville, Ohio/Sandusky Perkins) was 2-for-4.
Ashland had two hits in the nightcap. Sophomore righty Vince Frate (North Royalton, Ohio) started and took the loss. He allowed three runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings.
