The Ashland University baseball team got two more sterling pitching performances Monday (Mar. 7) and swept a doubleheader from Wheeling Jesuit, 11-0 and 3-1. The games were played in Auburndale, Fla., where AU (4-1) is spending the week.
In the opener, junior Aaron Hilt (Richmond, Ohio/Edison) pitched 5.1 innings of no-hit baseball. Flirting with a no-hitter is nothing new for Hilt, he pitched a no-hitter against Findlay last season. The right-hander finally settled for one hit allowed in six innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter before turning the game over to freshman David Devine (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson). Devine hurled a scoreless seventh inning.
The Eagles backed Hilt with a 14-hit attack. Senior second baseman Matt McAllester (Westlake, Ohio) went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs. Freshman infielder Tyler Gray (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) was 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs and first baseman Mitch Klein (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) was 3-for-5 with two RBI. Outfielder Shayne Herold (LeRoy, N.Y./Genesee C.C.) went 2-for-5 and scored twice.
The second game was much closer. Ashland called on freshman lefty Cole Hudson (Dresden, Ohio/Zanesville) for the starting assignment. The rookie pitched six innings and allowed a run on three hits. He walked two and struck out four. Junior Andrew Pinkleman (Delta, Ohio/Evergreen) worked a one-two-three seventh inning to register the save.
The Eagles got a two-run homer from sophomore first baseman Austin Erb (Strasburg, Ohio/Hanover) in the first inning to grab an early lead. Erb finished 2-for-3. He also doubled. Junior outfielder Ethan Houck (Fort Wayne, Ind./Glen Oaks C.C.) was 2-for-3 with a double. Ashland had six hits.
AU will play a single game against West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday (Mar. 8).
