Behind senior right-hander Ajay Meyer (Hamler, Ohio/Owens C.C.), the Ashland University baseball team upped its record to 7-1 with a 7-1 victory over Slippery Rock on Thursday night (Mar. 10) in Auburndale, Fla.
The teams played just one game and it started at 7 p.m. The original schedule had called for the teams to play a doubleheader beginning in the morning. Heavy rains changed those plans.
Meyer pitched a complete game in raising his record to 2-0. In nine innings of work, he allowed a run on six hits. He walked three and struck out 13. The Rock (6-6) scored its run in the ninth inning.
AU scored once in the first inning, three times in the second and twice in the third inning. The Eagles ended the game with 13 hits. Freshman infielder Tyler Gray (Plain City, Ohio/Jonathan Alder) was 3-for-3. Second baseman Matt McAllester (Westlake, Ohio) was 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs and shorstop Matt Gundlach (Monroeville, Ohio/Sandusky Perkins) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Outfielders Evan Melendez (Amherst, Ohio/Steele) and Ethan Houck (Fort Wayne, Ind./Glen Oaks C.C.) both went 2-5.
AU will oppose regional foe Saint Joseph's on Friday (Mar. 11).
