Three nationally-ranked NCAA Division II basketball teams will take to the Kates Gymnasium floor on Thursday (Dec. 8) night.
Both the Ashland University women's and men's basketball teams will open their home 2016-17 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule against Saginaw Valley State on Thursday – the women at 5:30 p.m., with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
The Ashland women are ranked No. 2 in the country (http://www.goashlandeagles.com/sports/wbkb/2016-17/releases/20161206f9e7jc), and lead the GLIAC South Division at 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the league, while the No. 24-ranked Cardinal women are in a three-way tie for the GLIAC North Division lead at 6-1, 2-0.
Ashland's men (6-1, 2-0) will look to stay undefeated in conference play against the No. 1-ranked Cardinal men (8-0, 2-0). The Eagles lead the GLIAC South, while SVSU is tied for first in the GLIAC North, and the two teams boast the top two current winning streaks in the league (Saginaw Valley State eight, Ashland five).
Prior to the men's game, Roger Lyons, the winningest head coach in AU men's basketball history, will be honored, as well.
